Promoting Kratom as a tea is the most beneficial for adoption since the history of drinking hot water served with fresh leaves spans thousands of years. For most of us, tea is familiar and something we consume frequently. Furthermore, consuming Kratom as a tea is one of the fastest and most efficient ways to obtain all the benefits of the plant. Its effects can kick in as quickly as 10 minutes for some, while for others it can kick in after 1 hour. It all depends on the strain and the person taking it.
Kratom tea is becoming popular
For millions of people across Canada and the United States, Kratom tea has replaced coffee and regular black tea. Reports reveal that there are between 5 million to 10 million users of Kratom across North America—at least 5 million of that comes from the United States alone.
Kratom leaves range between bright and dark green depending on the strain and geographic region, and have prominent veins on them. Centuries ago, these green leaves were famous in traditional Asian medicine — used for diarrhea, pain, depression, opiate withdrawal, energy and focus.
Different forms of Kratom
Kratom can be found in various forms depending on where you buy the products online. In Southeast Asia (i.e. where Kratom is cultivated), most people buy, sell and consume Kratom as a fresh leaf. For farmers, they simply pick the leaves directly off the tree and chew on it for the effects. For others, consuming Kratom as a tea provides the most benefits for the least amount of work. Plus, Kratom tea can be prepared with other nutritious foods and substances to produce a tasty drink.
Over time, farmers decided to dry the Kratom leaves in order to prepare the product for international trade. These dried leaves are then crushed into a fine powder for ease of use. Some companies even offer the plant in capsule or extract form. Consuming capsules will enable users to feel the effects of Kratom without the bitter taste and aroma, while Kratom extracts are very potent and offer an efficient way of intaking Kratom.
Today, Kratom is available for sale in many different forms online to users all around the world.
How to use Kratom leaves and Kratom powder for tea
As mentioned earlier, consuming Kratom as a tea is one of the best ways to use Kratom powder.
Kratom tea is actually very easy to prepare. If you’re using Kratom powder, all you need is a cup and a spoon. If you’re using Kratom leaves, you’ll need to use a strainer or filter to separate out the leaves. The idea is to extract all the alkaloid contents in the leaves.
How strong the Kratom tea is depends on how much water is used to boil the leaves or powder, and the strength of the Kratom itself. Different strains are stronger than others, and the seasonality also affects how strong the Kratom is. In Canada, several companies offer what’s known as Super Kratom, which are 15% stronger than regular strains due to the region, climate and topography in which their Kratom is grown in.
For stronger Kratom, we recommend reducing the dosage by 20-40% for the first time and gradually work your way up.
How to turn Kratom leaves into powder at home
Kratom leaves are cheaper to buy than kratom powder because they require much less work to prepare. Kratom capsules and extracts are the most expensive.
In North America, finding whole Kratom leaves is very rare because grounded Kratom powder is much easier to pack for South-East Asian farmers. For most farmers in this region, packing and harvesting tools are quite outdated and inefficient, therefore they will save time wherever they can.
If you are lucky enough to get your hands on some fresh Kratom leaves, you will need to dry the leaves before you can turn them into powder form at home.
After drying the leaves, you can use an ordinary coffee grinder to turn the leaves into powder. Grind it on high speed for 1-2 minutes or until you get a smooth texture.
Kratom dosage for making tea
If you are new to Kratom, you will have to do some trial and error before figuring out what dosage works best for you. Since too much Kratom can make you feel nauseous, we recommend starting at a low dose (0.5g) and gradually increasing the amount (2 to 4 grams is the sweet spot).
If you don’t have a digital balance readily available at home, using a simple measurement spoon should do the trick. Here are some references for quick conversion:
- One teaspoon = roughly 2 grams of Kratom powder.
- One tablespoon = three teaspoons or 6 grams of Kratom powder
For most people, taking 1-2 teaspoons will suffice. We recommend you stay away from high dosages or test it with caution. It could lead to feeling nauseous, dizzy or sedated.
When will you feel the effects of Kratom tea?
Kratom tea is an indirect method of consuming the plant. Mainly because Kratom tea is diluted with water, so the strength is weakened slightly. The effects can take between 10 to 45 minutes to kick in.
A more direct method of using Kratom is either in powder form through the toss and wash method, or in capsule and extract form. With these forms, the effects can be felt faster–some people feel the effects within 5 to 10 minutes.
How long do the effects last?
At low to moderate doses, kratom’s effects last between 2-3 hours. At higher doses, effects can last for 4-6 hours. However, it is dependent upon the strain which is used to make tea.
- Maeng Da (a very durable strain) can last up to 8 hours.
- Bali (a lighter strain) only lasts for 3-4 hours, even at high doses.
Tips on making the effects of Kratom last longer
Although the duration of Kratom effects are mostly based on the strain you take, there are a few helpful tips and tricks that can prolong the effects. Here’s a list of the top 8 tips:
- Select a potent Kratom strain to make tea
- Use enhanced strains such as “Super Kratom” which are 10-15% stronger than standard strains
- Try a moderate dose (between 4 to 6 grams) of Kratom. For Super Strains, however, reduce the dosage by 15%.
- Brew the tea longer so more alkaloids are released into the water.
- Drink Kratom tea on an empty stomach; it will cause the effects to appear soon and stay longer.
- Avoid heavy meals before drinking Kratom tea; doing so will delay and reduce the effects even more.
- Switch up the strains regularly to avoid building a tolerance to a specific Kratom strain.
- Combine two different Kratom strains together to enhance the effects of the tea. Ensure the dosage is accurate.
